Born in Chippawa, Ontario, Canada, just outside of Niagara Falls in 1934. Attended high school in Croatia after the family moved there in 1947. Returned to Canada in 1952 and worked in the construction trade for 9 years. Attended Teachers' College in Toronto 1960. Earned a General Arts Degree at University of Toronto. Taught elementary school from 1961 to 1978 (Niagara Falls and Atikokan, Ontario) and then a high school alternate learning program in Atikokan until 1990. During that time also taught darkroom and photographic skills to elementary and high school students as part of their school programs. Spent the 1978-79 school year in Croatia teaching English and photographing extensively. Since retiring from teaching in 1990, spent considerable time travelling and photographing in Europe, the American South West and Mexico. A self-taught photographer, who uses 35 mm and medium format cameras, and loves working in his dark room printing his own black and white work. Although he does some colour, he specializes in black & white fine art photography.

Over the course of Joseph's photographic career, he has had 16 one person exhibitions, in Canada and Europe, and has participated in another 15 group shows. He has won numerous awards, been published in several magazines and newspapers, and has received several grants from Ontario Arts Council supporting the continuation of his work.
